Terran Gates

President, Owner, Certified Prosthetist Orthotist, and Exercise Physiologist

I began my career in Prosthetics and Orthotics back in 2010 shadowing in a local clinic. I immediately fell in love with the idea that I could have a career that balanced working with my hands and working for people. There was something else that took me a while to identify that simply made me love working with this patient population. From that point, I made the decision to follow this curiosity and began the 8-year journey to becoming certified. I completed my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and Mathematics at University of Arkansas Fayetteville (Woo Pig!) and went on to complete my Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. I completed a dual residency and six board exams to earn my American Board Certification in both Orthotics and Prosthetics. I spent the next six years at a locally owned prosthetics and orthotics company hungry for knowledge and expanding my skill set. Through the fortune of timing and wonderful teachers, I quickly developed a skill for difficult presentations and transfemoral prosthetics. I love a good challenge to come up with a unique design! During this time, there was a shift in the field to mass production, digital workflow, and focus on quantity over quality, much like other areas of healthcare. This seemed to go more and more against the reason I got into the field and limit the relationships I develop with all my patients. That’s when I decided it was time to open my own clinic. One that is focused on quality, handcrafted prosthetics and orthotics built around the unique individual and centered around getting to know each person. Without spending the time to listen to a person’s needs, you can’t hope to meet all their goals. At Gates Prosthetics + Mobility Clinic, I control the quality I sign my name to!

In my transition, I saw another need that shaped my clinic. Too many of my patients struggled with living a healthier lifestyle, even though they were motivated to make changes. Meeting the recommended exercise amounts is difficult for everyone; adding a mobility impairment to this adds a whole other level of challenge. I found myself studying adaptive training textbooks and offering advice to the people I worked with. I decided to pursue a certification in Exercise Physiology with specialization in Inclusive Fitness. I wanted to be able to provide the wholistic approach that involved both the tool to do the work and the plan to get you there. This journey brought me to the answer of what I love most about my patients and being part of their process. And that’s seeing the GRIT that they bring to the table. Being part of this very personal journey from what is often a low point in their life, watching them make the courageous decision to go for it, and helping with the work to get to their goals! That’s why I do what I do! And that’s why I opened Gates Prosthetics + Mobility Clinic!

Roslyn Colston, COA, LPOA, CPed

My introduction to orthotics and prosthetics came very early, as I sustained a knee injury high school that required reconstruction and the use of multiple knee orthoses. However, life continued, and I moved to Galveston, Texas to pursue a degree from Texas A&M- Maritime Academy.

Graduating in 2009, I had aspirations of embracing my love of the outdoors by becoming a park ranger, the recession had other plans. Unable to secure employment in my field of study, I took a position as an office administrator for a local O&P company. I found out later that the other applicant was their first choice, but she had passed away by the time they offered her the position. May she rest in peace, but that particular event changed my life forever, professionally and personally.

I immediately started to thrive in my new position. I began climbing through the ranks, obtaining Assistant Licensing in Orthotics and Prosthetics as well as Certification in Pedorthics. During this time, I was able to work closely with orthopedic residents and attending physicians at the University of Texas Medical Branch, which greatly increased my knowledge of the procedures and treatments that proceed and follow our orthopedic and prosthetic interventions.

In 2017, I chose to move back to Arkansas. Being raised in Southwestern Arkansas, I knew of the beauty of the Ozarks. I was very excited to fill my weekdays with caring for patients and improving my skillset and weekends with hiking, kayaking, and camping. Within a few years, I became Clinical Manager of our office in West Plains, Missouri. I was very proud of our practice: our patients and referral sources were happy! However, all good things must come to an end, the company changed, it became too hard to do my job to the level of quality that my patients deserved.

Luckily, I was able to bring the O&P experience I have been assembling since 2010, to the table at Gates Prosthetic and Mobility Clinic. I believe that my active experience through the whole process, from patient to administrator to clinician to clinic manager, helps me to effectively navigate you through the process of obtaining and maintaining your orthotic or prosthetic device in a timely manner in accordance with your medical and financial teams’ requirements/recommendations.

Our focus at GPMC is to provide our patients with the best device(s) for each individual’s needs and goals that can directly improve their quality of life. Our employees will be there each step of your journey to provide education, support, advice, and encouragement. I am extremely happy to have the opportunity to live in and serve the people of the Ozarks. I am excited to have the support and resources of Gates Prosthetic and Mobility Clinic behind us as we embark upon our journey together.
